Diplomacy and negotiation are at the heart of Model United Nations (Model U.N.) – a simulation in which students assume the identities of diplomats of various member states of the U.N. Participation in Model U.N. provides students with a practical – and fun – experience that teaches valuable skills.

As students prepare for the simulation, they gain in-depth knowledge of the country they represent and of the organizational structure and policy-making processes of the U.N. The simulation itself helps students to gain skills in negotiation and communication, while also learning parliamentary procedure.

Students are often attracted to Model U.N. because of their interest in international relations, but the practical skills gained through participation in Model U.N. are valuable in a variety of careers.

Students may obtain up to three hours of course credit for participation in Model U.N.  These three hours of course credit can be applied to the political science and international relations major or can be used as general elective credit. Students may repeat the class on a non-credit basis.

Enrollment in the class allows students to participate in Truman’s award-winning Model U.N. team, which competes with other college-level Model U.N. teams from across the nation every November in Chicago.
