US Department of State Critical Language Scholarship:

Megan Kraus (Romance Language, Linguistics double-major) will spend the summer of 2019 in Azerbaijan.  The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains.

National Competitive scholarships:

Kathleen Placke (Spanish major) was awarded a $2500 study abroad scholarship for the summer of 2019 by Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society.

National officers:

Emily Camden (Classics major) was elected as national vice president (megale hyparchos) of Eta Sigma Phi, the National Classics Honor Society, at the annual convention held at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota.

Conference presentations:

Joe Slama (Classics major) and Austin Redding (Classics major) presented their capstone papers at the national convention of Eta Sigma Phi, the National Classics Honor Society, held at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, May of 2019; they were two of only four undergraduates nationally to be selected for this honor.

National Awards:

  • Luke Bishop (Romance Language major),  Matt Warner (Spanish major; Spanish MAE graduate student), Sadie Williams (Spanish minor), and Shelby Kovack (Spanish minor; MAE) will spend the 2017-2018 academic year as Fulbright Scholars in Spain.  Lucas Derry (French major) has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to teach English in the Republic of Georgia, and Christy Crouse (Spanish /Political Science major) will teach English in Colombia in the 2017-2018 academic year.  The Fulbright Program is the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program.
  • Christy Crouse (Spanish/Political Science major) has been awarded a US Department of State Critical Language Scholarship to China for the summer of 2017.
  • Christy Crouse: Spanish major, has been awarded the Premio Mario Vargas Llosa, a joint award of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese and Sigma Delta Pi.  One award is granted annually to an undergraduate student who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in upper-division Spanish courses and exemplary involvement in extra-curricular activities related to Spanish.

  • Clara Miller-Broomfield (Romance Language major) has been accepted as a paid intern in the SITE Program, where she will work as an English Teaching Assistant in the schools of the Lombardy Region of Italy in 2017-2018.(  Assistants in the schools of  the Region of Lombardy, Italy.
  • Lauren Kammerer (Romance Language major) and Anne Weis (Biology major) have been accepted to the 2017 “VoluntarItaly” program.  They will spend the summer in Italy volunteering and teaching students of Italian, ages 18-25, for the Oratori Lombardi in the Mantua area.

Federal Bureau of Investigation:

  • Patrick Morgan (Italian student) has been accepted in the Future FBI in Training program, Summer 2017, which has a critical need for those with language backgrounds.

2015-2016

Fulbright Fellowships:

  • Once again the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs has recognized Truman as “a top producer of U.S. Fulbright students for the 2015-2016 academic year”. —Chronicle of Higher Education
  • The Fulbright Program is the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program. Classical and Modern Languages congratulates German major Katrina Goosey, who will spend the 2016-2017 academic year as a Fulbright Scholar in Germany.

World Conference on Undergraduate Research:

Romance Language major Clara Miller-Broomfield will present her paper  titled “Intercultural Exchange in the Compendio de los boticarios (15th c.)” at the World Conference on Undergraduate Research in Qatar in November of 2016.  Clara’s research project was supported by a Truman Grant-in-Aid of Scholarship and Research in the spring semester of 2016, mentored by CML’s Dr. Thomas Capuano.  Click to read Clara’s abstract.
