Truman offers clarinet students a wide range of performing experiences in our instrumental ensembles, which include a clarinet choir, woodwind quintets, clarinet quartets and the annual Gold Medal Concerto Competition.

You’ll attend clarinet studio class once a week, with opportunities to perform solos, orchestral excerpts, etudes, and chamber music at least twice a semester. The class includes presentations on a variety of topics, such as clarinet performers, literature, and the history and development of the clarinet.  We also discuss reed preparation, rehearse clarinet choir music, and hold mock juries.

A Lively Community of Learners

Recent clarinet student accomplishments include receiving a Fulbright Grant to teach in Spain, attending the Tanglewood, Brevard, and Aspen summer music festivals, winning Truman’s Gold Medal Concerto Competition and Missouri Music Teachers Association Competition, presenting at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research, being appointed to Adjunct Clarinet Professorships, and receiving graduate acceptance into some of the most prestigious music programs in the country.

Each year, Truman students work with guest clarinetists representing some of the most accomplished performers and teachers in the nation. They perform recitals, offer master classes, and discuss and share of musical ideas. Recent guests include:

• Dr. Diane Barger, Professor of Clarinet at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
• Diana Haskell, Associate Principal Clarinetist of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra
• Tzuying Huang, Bass Clarinetist of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra
• Dr. Elizabeth Crawford, Professor of Clarinet at Ball State University
