Music Department—Programs and Studios
Strings Studio
You can work closely with faculty in private instruction, master classes, studio classes and chamber music coaching.
Perform in the University Symphony Orchestra, which is comprised of both music majors and non-music majors and performs in concerts like the annual New Music Festival and in collaboration with the University Chorus. This ensemble has performed numerous times for the Missouri Music Educator Conferences, and toured both nationally and internationally, including trips to Italy, France, Austria, and the Czech Republic.
Solo and chamber music performance is fostered through student recitals, the President’s String Quartet, and Truman’s prestigious Gold Medal Competition which provides an opportunity for students to perform as soloists with the university orchestra.
Truman string students come from throughout the Midwest and include many former members of All-State and major metropolitan area youth orchestras, among which are a former concertmaster and principal viola of both the St. Louis Youth Symphony and Missouri All-State Orchestra, as well as international students from Italy, Australia, Japan, and Hong Kong.
String alumni are regularly accepted to leading graduate programs and summer festivals and teach in public school string programs throughout the country.
For more information on the String Program at Truman, contact Dr. Paul Grobey, violin/viola or Dr. Brian Kubin, cello/bass.
