Dr. Eric Dickson is the Associate Dean for the School of Arts & Humanities at Truman State University. Prior to his current position, he was Truman's trumpet professor and Brass Choir director for nine years. Before coming to Truman, Dickson was a member of the Richmond (IN) Symphony Orchestra, the Lafayette (IN) Symphony Orchestra, and an active freelance performer and educator based in Indianapolis, IN. He has performed internationally on Broadway tours of The Drowsy Chaperone and A Chorus Line, and as principal trumpet of the Hollywood Concert Orchestra.
Dickson has presented master classes and clinics to students around the country, including appearances at Auburn University, Ball State University, the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, and Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He is a guest faculty artist at the Midwest Trumpet Festival, held annually at Pittsburg State University. Previously, he was on the faculty of the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp for five years.
A strong advocate for mental health and general wellness, Dickson is a Certified Teacher with the Institute for Mindfulness Based Wellness and Pedagogy. He regularly presents lectures and master classes on the benefits of mindfulness practice in maintaining mental health, as well as its use in music performance. He is a contributor to the International Trumpet Guild Journal, having written articles on life as a touring musician, and on the influence of music theory in performance.
Dickson holds degrees from Minnesota State University–Moorhead and the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. He is a former student of John Rommel, Ed Cord, Joey Tartell, Kevin Kjos, and William Adam.
