Spike, Truman State University’s most beloved Bulldog, embodies the tenacity and pride that drives success. From helping cheer on Truman athletes to making Bulldog fans smile at the Homecoming Parade, Spike has found his calling representing the spirit of cooperation and achievement that thrives on the Truman campus.
Mascot Appearances
The smart and fun-loving Spike comes out of his doghouse as often as possible to spread Bulldog pride at sporting events and campus activities.
Spike may be available to appear at your next event.
Appearance Details and Requirements
- Submitting a request does not guarantee an appearance
- Requests should be made ideally one month in advance but at least 2 weeks
- Outdoor appearances will be cancelled if there is inclement weather
- Spike requires a private area (not a restroom) to unload gear and change without being seen
- Spike cannot participate in activities that would risk injury to Spike or others
Appearance Rates
In general, Spike needs a rest every 20 minutes. An hour event would mean Spike would participate for 20 minutes, rest for 20 minutes (in a secure area where he cannot be seen, not a restroom) and then participate for an additional 20 minutes.
- 1 hour: $25
- 90 minutes: $35
- 2 hours: $50
- Parades: $50-$200, depending on length of parade route, walking versus riding, and weather
If a handler is needed, the rates would double.
Outdoor events in very warm weather may require additional breaks in an indoor, cool location. Spike will also need to have water provided.

1908
The idea of the bulldog was introduced during the 1908 football season when Coach O. C. Bell started describing his football players as bulldogs due to their unrelenting determination to succeed. While maintaining high academic marks, the unshakable team won all of their games that season.
1915
The name caught on, and in 1915, a new tradition was born when a student committee recommended that the bulldog be adopted as the official school mascot. The bulldog, a universal symbol for tenacity, was chosen because the characteristic was typical of the school’s athletic teams.
Early 1950s
During the early 1950s, the mascot was represented by a live bulldog named Brandy.
1956
The freshman class of 1956 acquired a live bulldog named Sixty as a class gift. Named in honor of their anticipated graduation year, Sixty became one of the most famous mascots for the school.
1979
The modern version of the bulldog mascot first appeared at the 1979 Homecoming football game.
Early 1990s
For a period of time, the mascot (now named Spike) had a partner named Simone.
Today
Spike is the epitome of intelligent, fun-loving, and dedicated Truman Bulldogs everywhere. Students with engaging personalities can audition for a chance to serve in this unique position.
